Sophia Shepherd (High Five Chiropractic Office Manager and Dr. Shepherd's Wife)

For the record, when I married Dr. Shepherd, formally known as simply "Brad" he was on his way to being a math teacher! I cannot express to you enough how content I was knowing this! I myself was a seasoned Medical Assistant who had worked in a variety of settings including clinical, urgent care, and hospital's! I had the opportunity to work closely with Doctor's of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort Worth, Texas and even had myself on route to becoming one myself when Brad met me. Needless to say, on the eve of entering the teaching program at UVU (UVSC back then) he expressed to me reservations about his chosen path. He said he thought that he would like to be a chiropractor. Initially, I was horrified. The ONLY thing I knew about a chiropractor was from the infamous 'K-Clinic' commercials that loop in my home state of Texas frequently, "We're staffed with Medical Doctors NOT CHIROPRACTORS."

So, being the loving wife I am, I warmly suggested he be a Doctor of Osteopathy instead- or an Medical Doctor! A real doctor! After all, he was smart enough. To my dismay, he said that blood and various other bodily fluids made him nauseous! Frantically I suggested he at least shadow a practicing chiropractor before we do anything rash! He agreed and still wanted to be a chiropractor. So I figured I better see what exactly a chiropractor is. Googling it did nothing to help my fears, it just made my horrification on the matter a living nightmare. The amount of anti-chiropractic information immediately available to a curious individual such as I cast a shadow so great on their profession that its a miracle any of them survive in the profession, and sadly, I am finding, many don't!

Since Brad was resolved and Google wasn't helping I asked him to take me to see the Chiropractor he shadowed first hand. We were escorted to a dim room after taking a spin on a fancy massage chair. Dr. Free located in Pleasant Grove walked in shortly after and said, "Who's first?" I pointed at Brad because I didn't really know what he was talking about. Brad laid on this low table face down and he messed with his feet, then his back, and asked him to turn over. When Brad was lying on his back Dr. Free was feeling his neck and then jerked it to the right. I just KNEW HE KILLED MY HUSBAND! It looked like a scene right out of a mob movie. My husband was whacked for sure! He survived, to my delight and it was my turn. I think I was so numb that I just coped with what I was about to have done by leaving my body. I did. It was over, painless, and when we got to the check out desk I was encouraged to come back in a week while Brad was put on an "as need" basis.

Little did they know, I would never be back there! So, the next week, at the request of my husband, at my appointment, I left my body in meditation again and came back to it upon checkout. Again, I was asked to come in a week later. This time, I WAS NOT going to do it no matter what! When we got to the car I started sobbing. The feeling I had toward chiropractic at that point was that it was wrong. Evil.

Maybe it was my Medical Assisting seasoning. Maybe it was all the anti-chiropractic information I had read. Whatever it was, my sweet husband was determined and I figured I had quite a while to get 'comfortable' or come to terms with him being a chiropractor. In fall 2004 we settled in a beautiful Saint Louis suburb called Chesterfield and he started school. It was intense! Even though I could go see the student interns for free I wasn't going to let a student near my back or neck! Ironically, it was a DC (Doctor of Chiropractic) doing a presentation at a MLM meeting I was invited to by a friend who introduced me to what a chiropractor really was. What this gentleman said was honorable! In a nutshell, a chiropractor removes interference in the spine so your nervous system is free flowing. It rang true to me. He said if you watch what you eat, exercise, see a chiropractor, and honor your body it needs nothing to function optimally. I could buy that!

At that point in time I was a new mom perpetually on the latest and greatest prescription nasal spray, pill Zyrtec (for allergies) and had been struggling with IBS and some bouts of depression bad. I was excited to start my chiropractic journey! I chose the guy who had helped me get excited about chiropractic. At my first visit he did a very respectable exam. He used technology and X-rays to show me how awful shape I was in. I didn't believe him. AT ALL. I felt great. He actually put me on a rather vigourous care plan. 3 days a week for 4 weeks. I figured I would indulge him and show him at the end of that series of adjustments how eligible I am to go to once a month! To my extreme displeasure, at my re-exam 4 weeks later he said I was doing worse. WHAT? he recommended another 2 days a week for 3 weeks. He knew he had lost me! He asked me to get dressed and meet with him in his office. I said, "I like you, can I just come once a month from now on?" He said, "If you don't want to follow my care plan, I am happy to refer you out to someone who cares less about you." Oh man, I was DONE. I took years off of chiropractic care. It was a scam as far as I was concerned!

Eventually I started seeing a neighbor who was further along in school at that time, but is now well established in Post Falls, Idaho http://nwchiro.com/ who had different techniques that weren't cracking and popping. Logan Basic and BEST. He adjusted me when I was pregnant with our daughter. He was banned from my neck and he knew it! As trust started building with this gentleman he asked me to let him palpate my neck. This means, feel for subluxation. I had some, bad, and he showed me gently how far we would go to the side with my neck. This eased my fears knowing it wasn't as it looked to be mob like! I am so thankful he helped me overcome my neck adjusting fears as I now know it is that particular area that is in charge of so much our our bodies functions! In fact, a lot of chiropractors build their practice ONLY ADJUSTING UPPER CERVICAL because that area makes such a difference in our total well being! Maybe their schooling was different in adjusting the neck because so far, all Logan grads are so gentle and still get the job done!

Luckily Brad himself eventually got far enough along in school to adjust me at our home. I trusted him and now, only trust him. So obviously I still have fears thanks to Google and the machine that controls everyone's thoughts! That same machine pumping out smiling individuals taking a pill for the latest and greatest condition that you probably have! I mean, some of those ED (erectile dysfunction) commercials make me want to pick up the phone and call my MD and I don't even have that plumbing!!!?

Okay, so on to my personal testimony of how chiropractic care has literally changed my life! I can honestly say I get ill very rarely, maybe once a year max and when I do I respect my body by knowing that I am coughing, producing nasal congestion and perhaps a fever for a reason. My body is expressing wellness and doing its job. I no longer look at it like a fire I need to put out with pills. I rest, and honor the symptoms knowing that they will be over soon. I even have Brad check me a few times a day for subluxation, and have them removed if they are there. However, I do reach for symptom relief when I have to sleep or perform motherly functions. It helps but I now know it isn't the NyQuil or advil making me heal, its just helping me endure the course!

Allergies are a thing of the past. This has been the most exciting thing for me! I do take a quality multi vitamin, calcium lactate, allerplex, and saline nasal spray. These are Natural whole food supplementations or products that give my body the tools it needs to overcome things naturally. Whatever I don't need my body just flushes it out all by itself.

IBS is non-existent. I try to eat right but fail frequently. I can't think of any thing I did to extinguish this condition except for chiropractic care alone!

My depression is more or less really bad PMS. Dr. Helvey introduced me to Min Tran and I took it regularly for a time just before we bought his practice and noticed no anxiety, no blues, and not nearly as much yelling at my kids. I haven't taken it regularly for quite some time but I use it as needed particularly when my husband will say, "Babe, are you taking your Min Tran?" It is awesome stuff, and what makes it better is it is natural help. Not scary synthetic stuff that if I forget to take it or don't want to take it anymore I can't stop without guidance or potentially hurting myself. I am just discovering energy healing and know I have a good year of trapped emotions I need to have cleared.

My wellness regimen now includes an hour massage at least once a month and acupuncture once a month, Daily Standard Process Catalyn, Calcium Lactate, and Allerplex! I would do more if I could  afford it! My goals now are to get in a healthy BMI and continue to spread the good news about chiropractic. God Bless the struggling chiropractors! It has to be one of, if not, THE most misunderstood healthcare professions available today! Discover it for yourself if you haven't already!

My kids get adjusted regularly. Whether this or luck is why I have only taken them in for illness once, and told it was already running its corse and patted on the back and sent home, or my medical assisting knowledge but they have never needed medical intervention and only go in for wellness. They love to get adjusted!

Thank you High Five Chiropractic and Dr. Brad. My family has been in better health since we started seeing Dr. Brad. I was looking for a new Chiropractor that would not just snap my body and send me on my way. In speaking with his awesome Office Assistant Sophia I knew I wanted to check it out.
What I like best about Dr. Brad is that he educates all of my family on wellness. We have learned that if our body is healthy it can heal its self.
My children rarely get sick and if they do the the length of the illness is much shorter than normal.
My son has Type 1 diabetes and he did not miss a day of school last year due to illness.
We are seen at least once a month and my kids look forward to their visits.
We highly recommend Dr. Brad and High Five Chiropractic to anyone looking to find excellent WELLNESS Care.

Thank You Dr Brad and Sophia for giving my family excellent Wellness Care!

I initially came to High Five Chiropractic for low back pain so severe I couldn't hardly do anything! in fact, pain was part of my life. Now I come in regularly and insist my kids get adjusted too! I feel like I can function better, and I am not hurting constantly anymore! As a bonus, I also have resolved stomach issues! I love chiropractic!

Thanks..Laura, Jayla, and Bailey Carter

I was feeling a pain in the tail bone and had numbness in both hands.  It was hard to sit for an hour at church and I had little touch feeling in the finger tips.  I tried Tylenol for pain so I could sit through church.

My problem now is being so relaxed that I fall asleep at church.  My hands are back to thier norm for feeling and touch.  I'm happier and enjoy life more.  I wasn't sure if Dr. Brad could fix things, but he did.

I originally came to High Five Chiropractic because it was recommended by my family.  I was told that Dr. Brad had a great touch.  I have a bad back, hip, and knee, and I hurt a lot.  Before coming into this office, I had tried over the counter drugs, and I went to a chiropractor for years.  Since starting care here, I have realized that the adjustments are much more comfortable. They didn't hurt as much.  I didn't expect to be treated so gently.

My daughter of 5 and 1/2 months at the time had severe excema, allergies, feeding problems, failure to thrive, and was constantly ill.  She cried constantly, never slept, so we never slept.

We saw a GI doctor, and a dermatologist. We tried Tagamet, hyocysame, full dosage (adult dosage) of Prevacid, Zyrtec, topical creams such as prescription Hydrocortisone, Cyproheptadine, and others.

After starting chiropractic care she smiled more, started sleeping through the night, sitting properly, stopped screaming, and she hasn't been sick nearly as much!  We didn't expect her to stop being sick, and we didn't expect the rashes to go away.
